Rear Projection Television Guide – Technology and Model Options

Rear Projection televisions are also called RPTVs and are a sound choice as a large screen TV option. For the most part projection televisions are pretty old school with the invention of LCD, Plasma and Flat Screen models, though there are some manufacturers that still making them, including, JVC, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, RCA, Hitachi and Sony.

Rear Projection TV Technology

Manufacturers are using three preferred forms of rear projection televisions, CRT technology (small cathode ray tubes), LCD projector technology and digital light processing. There are advantages and disadvantages to all three  technologies, but a growing number manufacturers are using either an LCD projector lamp or digital light processing.

Rear Projection TV models are ideal for large screen TVs since they can deliver a crisp picture with out distortion. Before late 2004, the CRT Projection models were preferred by viewers because they produced excellent audio and video and they were still affordable. These days consumers still choose RPTV models instead of LCD and flat panel televisions of the day because they are more affordable, but they cannot be attached to a wall like an LCD flat panel model.

The idea behind rear projection televisions is for them to process a small movie off of a digital video signal, then enlarge that picture to fill the screen. They are a great choice to process a digital signal to allow you enjoy a better display than a normal television.

Along with state of the art image and excellent sound as well as affordability, many people  like them because they produce a digital picture. Since all analogs signals are now obsolete, many customers will find that they can get a new digital ready projection TV for about the same price that it would cost to buy a digital converter box. This might be the most attractive feature of the rear projection televisions.

Even though they are more chunky than flat screen televisions, these rear projection televisions are designed to be thinner and more lightweight than recently manufactured projection televisions. And, while the LCD models have the flat screen benefit,  a large number of viewers now know that rear projection televisions incorporate better viewing angles, especially those that use a CRT projector. The CRT rear projection televisions are also longer lasting as well on account of the fact that RPTV technology has been perfected within the past several years.

The DLP rear projection televisions are another great alternative as they produce a high quality picture and are less bulky than the CRT models, and this seems to be the direction for the latest RPTV models. The DLP technology is able provide more viewing angles and a DMD chip which is easy to place. The DLP model is also relatively thin and features outstanding picture and sound quality. So, when shopping for a big screen consider the rear projection models that use DLP technology.
