Blu Ray versus HD DVD

Blu Ray is the latest and now the standard technology for high definition video that over took the HD-DVD technology of high definition movies and players. In a nutshell the difference between Blue Ray and HD DVD is nothing more than Industry standard, as both were intended for high definition video and movies, but who won the war of Blue Ray versus HD-DVD?

The Battle

Blue Ray technology has been in a long time battle to become the industry standard for the Toshiba-backed HD-DVD. The battle began when the Blu Ray Association developed the Blu Ray Disk to become the high definition video standard while Toshiba has fought to make their HD-DVD the standard. The impact on consumers was profound because those who wanted to pick a high definition venue had to choose, but how do you choose, when you don't know who will be the winner.

Obviously you have to pick the right one, as once a standard is set, the loser will no longer be supported on store shelves, with no players sold nor any movies developed in that standard. Many still remembered the horror stories that came for consumers in theVHS versus Betamax battle.Consumers as well as cNet were fed up with the uncertainty of their high definition future.

A big blow was dealt to HD-DVD in 2008 when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, which accounts for 20% of DVD sales in the U.S., said it would ship all of its high-definition titles in the Sony-backed Blu-ray by 2008 end.

Warner Bros.' decision to exclusively support the Blu-ray format helped settle a very muddled matter. When the biggest company in the home-video business chooses sides, that's big news. Not to mention the fact that Warner Bro's desicion made them five of the seven major Hollywood studios backing Blu-ray, as well as many smaller studios as well. Since then most retailers have followed suit.

and the winner is...

In 2009 it is clear that Blu Ray is the winner and the high definition video standard as Wal Mart, Best Buy and Netflix no longer sell HD-DVD and only carry Blu Ray movies as well as Blu Ray players. Also you will find not HD-DVD on Blockbuster store shelves, but you will find Blu Ray movie disks.
