Blu Ray Disk Drives Guide
Video disk technology has far surpassed expectations in the world today.
Disk Drive Definitions
Optical Disk
An optical disk is a medium used for data storage, like DVD, CD and Blu Ray disks. The Blue Ray disk is much different from the DVD types of disks as it consists of a ferromagnetic material that is sealed with a plastic coating.
Optical Drive
This is what is used to read and also to write on the disks themselves via a computer. The latest and now the standard in high definition video is Blu Ray and for writing to and reading Blu Ray disks there are Blue ray drives.
Blu Ray Drives
The Blue ray drives enable the reading and writing of data on a Blue ray disk
and the storage and data capacity is massive and the highest available of any disk to date, with capacities ranging between 25GB to 50GB. As opposed to other disks, such as DVD, the Blue ray disk is readable and writable on both sides.Blue ray drives are unique from other types of drives because they use a laser. When the laser is projected on the Blue ray disk, a light reflects, which, helps the computer to read the disk format. The light changes according to the different effects of the magneto-optical Kerr.
Another great feature that is unique to the Blu Ray drives is that they are
capable of reading all types of disks, including DVD and CD’s, which is a process known as backward compatibility. According to the Blu Ray Disk Association; this was done to make the drives more usable and friendly to the consumer. Although many consumers still use the standard DVD’s and CD’s for movies, music and other needs, Blu Ray is definitely the standard now for high definition and has gained wide spread popularity over the last couple of years. This is due to its high storage capacity, superb performance, the best in high definition television compatibility and the fact that Blu Ray disks do not degrade like the DVD’s do so they are much longer lasting.
Large amounts of computer data can be archived with Blu Ray drives and disks and most computer manufacturers are now integrating Blu Ray as a standard for PC’s and laptops and the majority of computer systems are now being made with Blu Ray drives installed.
