Toshiba BDX2150 Wifi Ready Blu Ray Player Review: The Pros

Price: The BDX2150 comes with an RRP of $99.99. This makes it incredibly cheap for a current generation Blu-ray player that can support streaming media services. Its one of the cheapest devices around, which certainly puts it on the radar of many budget shoppers.

BD Live: As with most current generation Blu-ray players, the Toshiba supports BD Live the new technology that means bonus content for films and TV series is no longer confined to whats included on the disc. Weeks or even months after a film is released on Blu-ray, producers can now provide you with new and interesting features such as additional cast interviews or more detailed behind-the-scenes footage.

Streaming Media: The Toshiba comes with a selection of streaming media services including Blockbuster, Netflix, CinemaNow, Pandora, Vudu, Youtube and Picasa. This is a decent selection, especially for the low price point, and means youll have a huge range of movies to choose from, as well as the ability to stream music. True, it's not as comprehensive as an LG or Panasonic Blu-ray player, but it's also a lot cheaper!

Picture Quality: Despite the low cost of this machine, the picture quality is as good as most other Blu-ray players. Although picture quality is more or less standard across the current generation of Blu-ray players, its worth being aware that a lower price doesnt mean a loss in quality here.

Toshiba BDX2150 Wifi Ready Blu Ray Player Review: The Cons

No Built-in Wi-Fi: There are quite a few issues with the BDX2150. Firstly, although its advertised as Wi-Fi ready dont expect to be connecting wirelessly from the moment you get the device set up in your living room. The Wi-Fi isnt built-in and requires a dongle that you'll need to purchase separately. The proprietary dongle designed to go with this Blu-ray player is scandalously priced, coming in at nearly the same price as the player itself!

So bear in mind that, if you do buy this player and fork out for the separate dongle, youll be paying as much as money as it costs to buy a number of better alternative players.

HDMI Only: While some players come with a range of outputs in addition to HDMI, such as component sockets, the Toshiba only provides HDMI output. This is something of a short coming for a budget device that is quite likely to be bought by those who dont yet have HD ready TV sets. If youre hoping to run this on a TV that doesnt have HDMI ports then youd better think again.

Disc Rattles: The disc tends to rattle when being played, and the internal noise that this generates can get quite loud, distracting from the viewing experience. Perhaps more concerning is the possibility of disc damage, and also durability of the product itself. If the player is rattling from day one, it might not last all that long.

No Disc Resume: Most Blu-ray players, even in the budget category, will remember your disc location if you switch the device off before finishing a film. This has been a standard feature in DVD players for years, and it feels reasonable to expect the same in all Blu-ray players. However, the Toshiba doesnt do this, meaning that if you dont finish watching a disc before switching the player off youll have to manually fast forward to the right location, and will be forced to watch FBI warnings, etc., again.

Slow Load Times: The BDX2150 suffers from slow load times. This is common among Blu-ray players, but this still clocks in well below average. Disc load times can be up to five minutes that means waiting up to five minutes before your movie starts to play. Most Blu-ray players haven't been that slow for years!

No On-Board Memory: Not only does the player come without a way to connect to a wireless network, but it also needs additional hardware before you can take advantage of BD Live. Because the Toshiba has no on-board memory, its necessary to purchase a USB flash drive before you can access BD Live features.

This is a problem that many Blu-ray players suffer from, so it isnt fair to single it out for this feature alone, but seeing as you already need to purchase a separate wireless adapter before you can use Wi-Fi on this Wi-Fi ready machine (and at a high price!) it would have been nice if either on-board memory or a small USB memory stick was included.

Freezing: As with some other cheap Blu-ray players, freezing is a problem. This device seems to freeze up more frequently than other products and requires a full reboot to get it working again. If you want a device that runs smoothly all the time then youll need to spend a little more money.

Is The Toshiba BDX2150 Worth Buying?

The Toshiba BDX2150 is one of the cheapest Blu-ray players on the market, but this is reflected in the quality of the product. The flaws outweigh the advantages here, so youd be much better off purchasing a slightly more expensive device that is problem free.

The Perks of Blu Ray and Blu Ray Players
Picture Quality
Superior high def resolution is a huge element of the reason why Blu Ray movies look excellent. This means you'll see a much more detailed picture: much more clearly defined features of people faces, colors of nature, close ups of wrinkles, facial imperfections, etc. The technological distinction is that Blu Ray's maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080 (1080p), while DVD is restricted to 720 x 480 (480p). Further than image resolution, Blu Ray additionally employs much better video-compression methods, producing much more contrast as well as better colors. It truly is the best quality of video you can get inb the market today, with a comparable, if note better than picture that you get at the movies, when the Blu Ray player is used in conjunction with an HDTV.

Audio Quality
Audio quality is also much better. New high-resolution soundtrack formats, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, are basically the same as the studio master, consequently you will be hearing sounds just as the director and audio editors designed.

Special Features
Blu Ray also has extra unique functions that DVD never did. The most basic innovation is the pop-up menu, allowing one to access the menu features as the movie keeps playing. Also, there is BD-Live, picture-in-picture video commentary, Internet connectivity, including models with built-in Wifi for streaming movies, videos, tv shows and all kinds of media from the Web.

Main Blu Ray Features
While most basic features of Blu Ray Players are the same, there are some specific things to consider when buying a player, especially, Internet connectivity options.

Player Options for Connecting to Internet
There are several options, depending on the player model and brand, for linking up your smart Blu-ray player to the Internet

  • A wired connection using Ethernet cable
  • Built-In Wifi Connection on the Player
  • A wireless connection using a compatible wireless adapter
  • A connection using power line Ethernet adapters
WiFi Built In - Smart Blu Ray Players - Connect to Internet and stream movies, music, TV shows and more with WiFi built in.
WiFi Ready - Means the Wifi is not built in and you will need an adapter of some sort to connect.
BD-Live is a Blu-ray feature that enables you to access content, features and activities via your smart Blu-ray player. On some movies you'll be able to download a variety of up-to-date content (for example, refreshed previews and exclusive special features). There are also a host of next generation possibilities, such as ringtone/wallpaper downloads, peer-to-peer interactions, live events and gaming activities. For example, on the Blu Ray version of Julie & Julia with BD-Live, you can bookmark Julia Child's actual recipes while you watch the movie. At the end of the film, you can e-mail yourself the recipes, pretty cool!
Bonus View
The Bonus View and lets you play back picture-in-picture content, which allows for a second video and audio stream.

Playing DVD's
The transition from DVD to Blu Ray is an easy one since all Blu Ray players play standard DVD discs. Actually, each and every Blu Ray player is also an upconverting DVD player.
