Blue Ray Technology vs. HD-DVD
Blue Ray technology, which has been in a long time battle to replace the previous Toshiba-backed high definition disk format, HD-DVD, has pretty much won as Wal Mart, Best Buy and Netflix no longer sell HD-DVD and only carry Blu Ray movies as well as players. Also you will not find HD-DVD on Blockbuster store shelves, but you will find Blu Ray movie disks.
Also, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, which accounts for 20% of DVD sales in the U.S., said it would ship all of its high-definition titles in Sony-backed Blu-ray by 2008 end."

The Blue Ray technology format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. It offers the ultimate high definition movie experience.
How does Blue Ray technology work?
The Blu-ray technology uses a special blue-violet laser for reading and writing on the DVD disk, which uses a shorter wavelength (405 nm versus 650 on a regular DVD), thereby allowing way more data to be held on a a Blu-ray Disc than on the standard DVD. Using this new format, the Blu ray discs can store five times more data than current DVD's!
Both Blu-ray and HD players are capable of playing CD's and DVD's but HD players are not capable of playing Blu ray discs and visa versa. Most all Blu Ray players can play DVD, but no DVD players can play Blu Ray.
While Blu Ray has not replaced regular DVD, yet, Blu Ray is the standard for high definition video and many older movies have been converted to Blu Ray as well as most all new releases as Blu Ray is supported not only by the major Hollywood studios, but the smaller ones as well. All new holiday films are on Blu Ray too, and many music videos as well.
